on my brand new HP PC when it was suppoed to be 640 GB ?? I know when they tell you its,say 1000 GB, its really only about 980 or 990 minimum so that all the rest is used for formatting, management etc. but how come when I got my new PC, its says 288 when it should be around the low 600s to high 500s in GBs

Cause you got half of what you were expecting to get. That’s about 320 GB Drive with an Operating system installed. I’m assuming windows is installed.
You should check you system and see what Control Panel tells you (I know nothing about Vista, so if that’s installed I can’t guarantee Control Panel, but you should have something). If half of your hard drive is filled with Demo software, I’ll suck on my big toe for an hour…

did u double check if the disk was pre-partitioned???

Because the rest of the hard drive is in use.
Run disk defragmenter.

Maybe HP lied about the hard drive or HP installed the wrong one in your system. I would take it back to where you got it and demand another one.

You sure it isn’t partitioned into 2 drives? I bought a terabyte hard drive. It only shows 960gb. LAME.

The hard drive is bloated with all kinds of software you don’t want or need — go through the uninstall process and select. Also, there probably is a back-up partition that takes about 10 GB.

What software have you installed, also checked the preloaded software….other than that bring it back, could have been a demo model

Are you looking after you installed a bunch of programs already? If not, then the computer store ripped you off.

a 600 gig hard drive may be to large for the board your using
check your bios ! if the bios does not see it as 600gig thats your issue and your gonna need to find a bios flash for your board
the board must support 48 bit addressing)
