How Do Cigarette Companies Attract New/existing Customers?

Hello!
Our class was asked this question today about cigarettes. In USA and Europe Advertising and Promoting of any brand of cigarette is banned. You cannot Advertise on Television and through any print media or Electronic media in USA and Europe. Even the shopkeepers are not allowed to display the cigarette Brands or use any posters.
So how does these companies promote or advertise their product in USA and Europe. For example, Marlboro cigarettes have the top cigarette business in the world. They used to advertise on Formula 1 cars and Moto races. But now it is banned too. So what strategy they use now?
How does these brands Attract customers to smoke their cigarettes. How they attract new customers?
My first Question on Yahoo! Answers. I am asking because i am not American or European and never visited them. So i have no idea how do they promote or advertise there.
Please help me solve this.
Thanks,
Ali

One of the tobacco industry’s most outrageous new tactics is the introduction of candy-flavored cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.
* R.J. Reynolds – the same company that once marketed cigarettes to kids with a cartoon character, Joe Camel – has launched a series of flavored cigarettes, including a pineapple and coconut-flavored cigarette called “Kauai Kolada” and a citrus-flavored cigarette called “Twista Lime.” In November 2004, they introduced Camel “Winter Blends” in flavors including “Winter Warm Toffee” and “Winter MochaMint”
* Brown & Williamson has introduced flavored versions of its Kool cigarettes with names like “Caribbean Chill,” “Midnight Berry,” “Mocha Taboo” and “Mintrigue.”
* The U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company is marketing spit tobacco with flavors including berry blend, mint, wintergreen, apple blend, vanilla and cherry.

Hey.
Well the main way they promote there cigarettes is through mouth to mouth talking…Someone will be like omg malboro is the best so then the other person will try! Also they attract new customers maybe if someone has had a cig for the first time with that brand they will then carry on using that brand all the time like i did when i first started smoking!…
You will also never know when a new cig make has come out unless you go to the shop which then you will see it behind the counter and maybe try it to see what its like!
They are the main ways.
hope i helped

I was also looking for the answer to same question. i don’t know if the shopkeepers keep cigarettes in front of display or behind. they are not allowed to keep in front or behind. Suppose I make a new packing of my cigarettes, how will I try to tell people that it is the new packing with a better taste?

Well my friend, this is actually quite confidential, but for you, I’ll let you in on our little secret…
It’s all executed very subliminally nowadays. In movies either it’s the “Bad Guy” or the “Rich & Successful Hero” that’s wielding the mighty cigarette. Same as it’s always been done, just now there’s a bit more emphasis on the Timing and Placement of when and how these role models “Strike a Flame” to “Light Up”.
Next time you see a cigarette being smoked on TV, look for Coffee someWHERE in that scene, or perhaps at the TIME a cigarette is being smoked there’s a party going on with, perhaps, some Alcohol. It’s all very suggestive nowadays. Coffee is a stimulant and so is Nicotine. Parties are a “good time” and therefore may we suggest a cigarette to accompany your “Good Time”.
See it’s all a mind game, where cigarettes are linked to Happiness, Success, Victory, all good things. This suggests (subliminally) that cigarettes are a good time or will make a good time even better.
Now I’m going to drop the reality bomb. There actually are cyborgs out there all over the world working for “Big Tobacco” sponsoring cigarettes by literally employing these techniques in real life everywhere… The hot chick at the casino smoking at the craps table – Cyborg, The bum loitering outside the “quickie-mart” smoking cigarettes – Cyborg, The successful people in fancy suits outside airports smoking – Cyborgs!! Anywhere that lots of people go in and out of, you’re bound to unknowingly encounter one of these genetically superior Cyborgs. They’re designed to resist the cancerous effects of smoking and are so well equipped that they can literally go for days on end without food or rest. They’re trained so that when they spot a Non-smoker that’s within earshot, they’ll speak the words “cigarette”, or “can I borrow a Lighter” or “Gotta Smoke?”… anything related to cigs that would imply that sense of Urgency and Satisfaction that comes with a simple puff on a Sweet & Juicy Cigarette!!!
Resist their forces my friend, Resist!!
